by Frank Barnett

Ever experienced a scenario like this? You are in your cubicle at work, it is now 10:30 AM and the boss asks you for a report due after lunch. You need all the focus and concentration in the workspace sometimes it just may be a little too noisy to gather your thoughts and with the deadline looming pressure may stunt creativity. The office environment can be littered with distractions, though some may indeed prove humorous than others, distractions are still distractions.

Nothing can be worse than being unable to focus when you really need to, so cubicle workers and office dwellers need all the help they can get in order to compose their thoughts efficiently and without distractions. This is where sound masking and white noise generators come in.

White noise generators and sound masking allows us to work in a more productive environment by affecting the ambient sounds around us. By either canceling or drowning out the sounds, people are able to focus more on work and less on ambient distractions that hamper productivity.

Sound masking work somewhat differently in how they treat ambient sounds. White noise tends to disrupt the current ambient sounds by having a negating effect on the sound in the area itself. Though in some cases the sound of the white noise is herd, it is nowhere near as distracting as a loud conversation in the next door cubicle. Sound masking takes a different approach, by introducing a different sound into an environment; the distracting sound can be drowned out in favor of the more relaxing sound. Sound masking usually takes on the sound of running waters, waterfalls or even blowing winds. These sounds effectively drown out noisy copiers, loud air-conditioning or much of any other distracting noises in the workplace.

There are numerous applications for this. It can also be used simultaneously to completely drown out sounds that are not needed for a certain endeavor. This may be extreme conditions. But it also helps people who are very sensitive to sound distractions.

So the next time you feel like your office is a bit too noisy and distracting for comfort, then these tools would greatly help everyone work more efficiently. After all, the productivity of everyone is going to greatly benefit the overall company output.

White noise generators and sound masking can dramatically increase office productivity by reducing ambient distractions caused by a loud or a noisy work environment. Offices are bound to have sounds that will never be of help for us when we think and go about our everyday calculating and brainstorming. So masking these sounds will be of great help especially if we really want to focus.
